The East End’s most visited museum, the Children’s Museum of the East End is holding their annual benefit, the CMEE Family Fair to raise $200,000.  However, this is not a typical Hamptons Gala affair.  Dress code suggests size 3T, fare will include hot dogs and cotton candy and entertainment is the circus clowns and balloonists.  That does not mean to imply that CMEE’s benefit is child’s play.  In fact, last year the CMEE Family Fair saw record attendance of almost 800 guests and this year, the museum is planning for a sold-out audience of between 950 and 1000 guests, and will feature performers from the Big Apple Circus.

WHO:               Co-Chairs, Mariska Hargitay, Ali Wentworth and Katie Brown.  Additional guests include: Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, and their two children, The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie’s Edie Falco and her family, Law and Order’s Elizabeth Rohm, ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Actor Peter Hermann, celebrated photographer and show host Tamara Lackey, as well as Senator Kenneth P. Lavalle.  Additional names forthcoming.

* Please note: Media coverage opportunities available throughout the event, but interviews should be pre-arranged through the Benson Consulting Agency.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF THE EAST END

Since opening their doors five years ago, the Children’s Museum of the East End offers 7,000 square feet of interactive space and community wide partnerships that promote learning through play.  From their unique Family Literacy Program to their Pre-school and their family therapy and job-training programs, CMEE has developed a mission of community outreach and development.

At the same time, CMEE continues to partner with mainstream programs such as Gymboree and Moonsoup to bring their programs to the East End of Long Island for both members and area visitors.  CMEE’s permanent exhibits include an ode to the East End, offering children the chance to shop at a farmer’s market, sail on the high seas and check-out Main Street, all while gaining math, literacy and social science skills.  SSHHH…we won’t tell the kids if you won’t!

While CMEE offers unparalleled children’s programing all summer long for the Hamptons Seasonal visitors, the heart of the museum has become their year-round involvement with the East End community and the opportunities they are providing to Long Island families.

CELEBRATED PHOTOGRAPHER TAMARA LACKEY ANNOUNCED AS PHOTOGRAPHER FOR CMEE FAMILY FESTIVAL

The Children’s Museum of the East End announced that Tamara Lackey, world-renowned children’s and lifestyle photographer, author and host of the new web interview show reDefine, will donate her services and be the photographer for its annual benefit, the CMEE Family Fair, on July 23. Hosted by co-Chairs Mariska Hargitay, Ali Wentworth and Katie Brown, the Hamptons’ premier summer event seeks to raise $200,000 for year-round programming at the museum.
Lackey, whose photos have appeared in publications including Vogue and Town & Country and the TV series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and whose most recent “edutainment” book plus DVD set is Tamara Lackey’s Capturing Life Through (Better) Photography™ http://bit.ly/nvSjLh says the event squares perfectly with her passionate commitment to charitable causes and what she calls her “delight and satisfaction in capturing what is most real and spontaneous in children.”
Tamara Lackey’s Capturing Life Through (Better) Photography™ will be available for sale in the Museum’s gift shop, MoonSoup, which will be open for business that day.
For the Children’s Museum of the East End, delight will likely register with old and young alike, and not only because the cuisine will include hot and dogs and cotton candy; entertainment will feature performers from the Big Apple Circus.
In 2010, the CMEE Family Fair saw record attendance of almost 800 guests and this year, the committee is planning for an even larger turnout approaching 1000. Executive Director Steve Long explains the importance of this benefit, “The Family Fair is a great way for CMEE to support its mission of promoting learning through play while raising the funds necessary to provide unique educational programs that address important issues facing families in our community.”

While CMEE remains the East End’s most visited museum and offers unparalleled children’s programming all summer long for seasonal visitors, the heart of the museum is their year-round involvement with the East End community and the opportunities they are providing to families in Eastern Long Island.

CMEE has developed a series of partnerships in the past few years that are designed especially to serve the East End community:

1.      After learning that one in seven families on the East End is functionally illiterate and their children are twice as likely to be illiterate themselves, CMEE partnered with Sandpiper Music Together to promote literacy, language acquisition, and parenting skills.
2.      In response to the long list of low-income families waiting for accessible pre-school in the East End, CMEE partnered with Head Start to house a pre-school inside the Museum for the first time.
3.      CMEE collaborated with the Retreat to help families affected by domestic violence by offering job-skills training for parents in CMEE’s classroom while their children participate in the Museum’s programming.
4.      In an effort to ensure that all children with physical and developmental disabilities can obtain the same educational and social benefits as other children, CMEE has worked with many partners in the community including the Child Development Center of the Hamptons, the Southampton Town Disabilities Committee, and the Flying Point Foundation for Autism.
CMEE’s Family Fair will be on July 23 from 10:30 am-1:30 pm at 376 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton. Advance purchase tickets are $150 for adults and $100 for children. For more information, please visit www.cmee.org or call 631-537-8250.

ARTISTIC ENTREPRENEURS PARTNER RIGHT BRAIN CREATIVITY WITH BIZ: “AN IDEA SHOULD NEVER GO TO WASTE”: Behold- OpenInvo

OpenInvo is a business created by Emily Lutzker and a committee of founders who provide companies with access to untapped creative resources for innovation, and to offer support services to both buyers and sellers of intellectual property.

“Valuable innovation comes from unexpected sources. Creativity is rooted in putting seemingly disparate things together, so we created a technology platform where these disparate things could have a chance to cross-pollinate,” says Lutzker. http://www.openinvo.com/about-the-process.

While innovation consultancies and licensing agencies provide similar services, OpenInvo uniquely offers an access point to unexpected sources, rather than trying to generate innovation or scout innovation.Bringing creative types to people or institutions who can utilize those ideas, OpenInvo provides a win-win situation. The inventors win because they would not know how to bring their ideas to market; the companies win because they have access to fresh ideas.

“Imagination is one of the most vital qualities we have as human beings. It should not be confused with knowledge, skills, or talent, or even ambition. Imagination is the key to innovation, and it’s the basis of what will feed the US economy. People with great imagination are our natural resources – they should be nurtured and rewarded for the things they dare to dream,” says Lutzker. (And she means it.)

So far, OpenInvo, still in its infancy, has arranged/and is working on partnerships and new products, including:
·         Pairing a manufacturer of backpacks from recycled plastic bags with a high-end designer.
·         Building a technology product for caregivers to a medical center
·         Creating a methodology for an organization to co-brand and reposition the concept
·         Refitting an existing web platform to revitalize the publishing industry.

“Shockingly, I’m finding it as creative and exciting and fulfilling as any exhibition I ever had as an artist,” says Lutzker. “After all it’s based on building a business that sells creative ideas.”

Next from Open Invo: OpenInvo Studio, a series of workshops geared toward corporations that are designed to bridge the gap between the practical and the creative, imparting new skills for better teamwork, problem solving, efficiency, and fearlessness in the office. http://www.openinvo.com/openinvo-studio

BENEFITTING FROM OPENINVO’s RIGHT BRAIN CONCEPT

The OpenInvo Studio evolved naturally from the bigger concept that OpenInvo is a platform to support the innovation process; it is not simply the marketplace for ideas. With backgrounds in the arts and creative industries, we saw that the skills that these creative types use every day and often take for granted, are the key to what companies constantly ask for.

“In other words, by learning the skills and methods of people in creative fields, businesses can benefit by getting a different perspective, learning a new technique, and perhaps even a new solutions. They tell us that creativity is the most important skill of the 21st century economy. It’s time we teach it,” says Lutzker.

BERLITZ CRUISING & CRUISE SHIPS 2011 by Douglas Ward- Thought Leader!

Now in its 26th year, the guide by Douglas Ward is the only cruise book you will ever need. Douglas Ward, the world's foremost authority on cruising and the author of all 26 editions of the 2011 Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships —an indispensable book for cruisers that is, Ward proudly says, “totally independent, with no commercial links to any cruise operator.”
In a 45-year career in cruising, he has earned a reputation as "the most feared critic in the business," according to The Times of London. Using an elaborate rating system, he has logged more than 5,600 days at sea on more than 1,000 cruisesThat is because Mr. Ward created a ranking system that enables him to systematically check every possible aspect of hundreds of cruise ships each year.
Equipped with tape measure and flashlight, Ward prowls and inspects each ship like a maritime Sherlock Holmes, thoroughly checking (and critiquing) all aspects of the cruise experience—from the quality (or lack thereof) of the cuisine and the entertainment to the size and comfort level of the cabins and the “hidden costs” that can ensnare the unwary (like paying “extra gratuities”). No element goes unnoticed. Is the height of toilets or the water pressure of showers problematic? Are the bath towels soft enough? Are there proper facilities for the disabled? The kitchens may be clean, but what of the fingernails of the servers—and are they attentive enough? That is Douglas Ward at work...
In the past ten years, American cruise travel has increased by 6.4%.  This year, it is estimated that 14.3 million people will embark on a cruise. Berlitz’s COMPLETE GUIDE TO CRUISING & CRUISE SHIPS 2011 is singularly devoted to provide consumers with every possible detail to help them choose the best possible cruise vacation this year with detailed, candid reviews of over 250 major ships, and Ward’s no-holds-barred assessments on:

  • Steering clear of some so-called “cruise discounts” that may actually be pricey marketing gimmicks
  • Avoiding some cruise-line rip-offs (watch yourself, for example, on currency conversions, paying extra gratuities and the  “unacceptably high” cost of transfer buses in some ports)
  • At-a-glance charts comparing the major cruise lines for cabin facilities, food, service and tours
  • The top cruise lines’ strengths and weaknesses
  • Where to find the best spas and entertainment
  • Expert advice for singles, honeymooners, families, and the physically-challenged
  • Expedition cruises, sailing ships and freighter travel
  • Full-color maps of principal cruise destinations

We Hunt Them; We Promote Them; Take their Advice

According to The Reliable Source, Tipper Gore, ex-wife of almost President Al, turned up in DC last night to emcee a screening of “The Music Never Stopped,” a film about family, healing and the Grateful Dead. Invited by Mickey Hart, a world leader in world music and longtime Grateful Dead percussionist, she was joined by the inspiration of the film neurologist/author Oliver Sacks, other DC luminaries, and Mickey who, at 67 was denied a glass of chardonnay because he had no ID.

That and Tipper's wearing of her wedding ring seemed to be meta tag alerts in this story.

The piece focused on the event:

  • Tipper was there wearing her wedding ring.
  • Nancy Pelosi was there without a gavel (ok I said the gavel part).
  • Mickey denied a drink is big news.
"The film is based on a case study by Sacks and tells the story of a father and his estranged son who slowly rebuild a bond throught he music of the Dead. Dad's a mellow guy who favors crooners and classics but the hemp-fueled hits of the '60s provide therapeutic enough for his neurologically disabled kid," summarizes the pieces. Good summary.

The real news:
  • Washington luminaries came out to see the film- what did they think?
  • Tipper Gore is friendly enough with Micky Hart to draw a crowd, and he's no deadbeat- just a leader in world music.
  • Oliver Sacks has unreaveled mysteries of the brain. In this one, he uses music as an example of healing. THIS is original.
It goes on to report that Rep Jim McDermott (D-Washington), serving his 12th term in the House, harummped the question . This implies, "I don't get it." Perhaps not a Deadhead but he asked a legitimate question- basically, "Why the Dead and not, for example, Paul Simon?" The Honorable McDermottt is, in fact, honorable, and has been in public service since 1970 - not counting the Navy and the fact that he's a doctor and was interested in the film.

As a physician, Representative McDermott is especially interested in health care issues. While serving in the Washington State Legislature, he crafted the Washington Basic Health Plan, the first state program in the country to provide low-cost health insurance to the unemployed and working poor. In the U.S. Congress, Representative McDermott is consistently active on health care reform issues. He founded and chairs the Congressional Task Force on International HIV/AIDS, and championed the AIDS Housing Opportunities Act.

So please, Reliable Source, let's not give Jim a harummp. Let's just say he ASKED. And let's give the people who work in neurological health care in a productive way some kudos.

PS -And now we have a film that prove this includes the Grateful Dead. You could say it includes much artistic endeavor in general which speaks to people emotionally and helps heal individuals and relationships.
